Works Included in my Anthology
Fiction
"The Jewelry" by Guy de Maupassant
This short story was such a good read. It made me think so much about the nature of love and truth. Maupassant ably showed the heartbreak of the man when his wife died and his betrayal at his wife's secret. He can make one question even the most fundamental parts of a relationship and wonder whether or not it's quite as valuable as it always seemed.
Drama
Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
I believe firmly that everyone should read this play (or watch the movie). It contains a message and a warning: be true to who you are, or happiness will evade you. Family love and pain stemming from it are also prevalent, as is terrible guilt. The pure emotion and brilliant writing make this a must read -- or see.
Poetry
"Ode to the Hotel Near the Children's Hospital" by Kevin Young
This poem, like the other two pieces in this anthology, is about family in some way. Following a man whose child is in the hospital, it speaks clearly of great pain and worry. The writing makes it easy to sympathize with the speaker, and for those who can empathize, it means that much more.
